Air Force Academy: advanced training during the “Purple Rain” exercise”

The Aspirants of the Eolo VI Course are leading the way in leadership, survival at sea, and high-intensity scenarios.

The exercise ended on July 17 at the Life-Survival Training Center in Nisida, Sardinia. “Purple Rain”, culmination moment of the 12th edition of the module F.I.L.M.C. (Integrated Training in Leadership, Management and Aerospace Competencies), which involved the Aspirant Officers of the Course Eolo VI of the Aeronautical Academy.

The activity, in which 89 participants took part, enabled the planning and conduct of a simulated aerial campaign in an international crisis scenario, through the deployment of a Air Task Group of the’Italian Air Force. The use of sailing boats, such as those used in aircraft, has enabled the reproduction of the main operational, logistical and decision-making dynamics inherent in a’Operation Outside the National Borders, In a context characterized by high complexity.

In this edition the Second Lieutenants del Course Drago VI they have supervised the direction and conduct of the exercise (DIREX), assisting the instructor staff in the planning and management of training activities, in testimony to the progressive growth of responsibilities in the training path of the Officers.

The exercise also saw the participation of attendees from other Training institutions of the Armed Forces and of State bodies, This confirms the path taken by the Air Academy to develop and consolidate training and exercise activities in an increasingly integrated and inter-service approach.

The activity was attended by the Commander of the A.M. Schools and the 3rd Air Region, Air Force General Francesco Vestito, and Commander of the Air Academy, Air Division General Davide Cipelletti. On that occasion, General Cipelletti welcomed the representatives of Air Staff, of Air Squad Command, of Logistics Command and School Command, This is a testament to the Armed Forces’ commitment to multidisciplinary training of officers, with particular emphasis on the most up-to-date technologies, such as cyber and the use of drone systems.

The module developed in a phase “pre-LiveX” (June 29 – July 3), dedicated to the logistical and technical preparation of the camp, and in a subsequent phase “LiveX” (6-10 July and 13-17 July), during which the participants faced progressively more complex scenarios, testing their abilities and skills. Leadership, decision-making autonomy, problem solving and the ability to work in a team.

Among the activities carried out are cyber attack simulations, operational environment health procedures, and management of threats from Improvised Explosive Device (IED), demonstrations of Crew Resource Management and application of international humanitarian law. Among the moments of greatest interest was a simulation of search and rescue at sea conducted with a helicopter. HH-139 of the 85th SAR Center (Search And Rescue) of the 15th Wing, During which the participants took part in the recovery operations at sea, directly experiencing the procedures and methods of using this unique operational capability of the’Italian Air Force.

The exercise was made possible thanks to the contribution of numerous Departments of the Air Force, including the 3rd, 15th, 16th, 32nd and 66th Squadrons, the 4th Communications Brigade, the Department of Educational and Management Training and the Department of Automated Information Systems, In addition to the collaboration of Italian Red Cross.
