The young patient, needing to reach the “Bambino Gesù” hospital in Rome as quickly as possible, travelled with her mother and a medical team on a Gulfstream G650 belonging to the 31st Wing.

The urgent medical transport of a baby girl, who was in imminent danger of death and needed to be transferred from Cagliari to a hospital in Rome, concluded on the afternoon of 28 May 2026 with her landing at Rome Ciampino.

The flight, as provided for by the procedures for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.

The activation was carried out at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Summit Situations Room of the Italian Air Force's 1st Air Force Command in Milan, which immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission.

Following all necessary procedures by the military crew, the G650 took off from Cagliari airport in the early afternoon of 28th May 2026, where the newborn, brought from the University Hospital of the Sardinian capital, was immediately boarded along with her mother and a medical team. After landing at Ciampino airport, which occurred shortly after 4:00 PM today, an ambulance arranged for subsequent transport to “Bambino Gesù” for admission.

This type of activity for the benefit of the community is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force. Flight Units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, but also of organs, medical teams or ambulances.

Every year, hundreds of flight hours are carried out for these types of operations by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
