The girl, positive for the virus and in danger of her life due to serious respiratory problems, traveled inside an ambulance loaded directly onto the aircraft of the 46th Air Brigade.
A C-130J of the Air Force has landed a few minutes ago at the military airport of Ciampino with a baby girl of just two years old on board, positive for Covid and in imminent danger of life due to severe respiratory insufficiency.
The little patient was admitted to the “Pugliese Ciaccio” hospital in Catanzaro when, due to the worsening of her clinical condition, it became necessary to transfer her immediately to Bambino Gesù in Rome.
The Prefectural Authority of Catanzaro requested emergency air transport, followed by the order for takeoff by the Situation Room of the Air Force Command from one of the Air Force crews, who are always ready to take off for this type of intervention, after coordination with the Italian Patient Evacuation Coordination Cell (ITAPECC) of the Inter-Force Operational Command (Covi).
Specifically, the use of a C-130J of the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa was necessary, suitable for boarding the ambulance in which the girl traveled, monitoring and assisting her breathing, along with a medical team. After the little patient’s landing at Ciampino, from where she was then transferred by land to Bambino Gesù, the aircraft returned to its base in Pisa to resume its 24/7 readiness service.
Through its Flight Departments, the Air Force makes available means and crews ready to take off at any time and capable of operating even in complex meteorological conditions to ensure the urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of life, as happened today, but also of organs and medical teams for transplants. Hundreds of hours of flight are carried out every year for this type of intervention by the aircraft of the 31st Stormo of Ciampino, the 14th Stormo of Pratica di Mare and the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa.
