In the wake of a historically strong military collaboration between Italy and the United States, the US Embassy in Rome has conferred important USArmed Forces honours upon three Officers of the Italian Air Force, recognising their contribution to the development of interoperability, operational cooperation and bilateral strategic coordination.

Among those decorated is the Air Lieutenant General Maurizio Cantiello, awarded the Legion of Merit, one of the highest US decorations awarded to military personnel of allied nations. The recognition values command appointments and strategic responsibilities that have significantly impacted joint decision-making processes and the effectiveness of multinational operational capabilities.

In parallel, the Lieutenant Colonel Vigilio Gheser and the Captain Matteo Vampo they have received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, intended for the recognition of outstanding operational performance and concrete contributions in multinational activities, joint programmes, and doctrinal and training integration initiatives.

At the ceremony, he took part in the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Squadron General, Antonio Conserva, whose presence underscored the importance of cooperation with the US counterpart.

Further testimony to the solidity of bilateral relations, as well as recognition of the Air Force's expertise, is the training of ten U.S. Air Force pilots at the International Flight Training School (IFTS) in Decimomannu: an element that highlights the strategic and technological value of the initiative in the global military training landscape.

The synergy between the two Air Forces is also strengthened through the sharing of advanced aerotactic platforms, the use of remotely piloted assets, and common interests in flight training, space, and satellite capabilities, including out-of-area operational contexts. A relationship that, in addition to consolidating joint operational effectiveness, favours new development opportunities in operational, industrial and technological terms, contributing to strengthening the capacity to respond to emerging challenges and projecting stability in areas of common strategic interest.
