Following Sunday 25th January's operation, another infant from Taormina, requiring transport to the Bambino Gesù hospital in Rome as quickly as possible, travelled alongside a medical team aboard a Gulfstream G650 from the 31st Wing.
A neonatal emergency medical transport of another two-month-old baby, in imminent danger of life, who was admitted to the San Vincenzo hospital in Taormina and needed to be transferred with the utmost urgency to the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital, has just concluded with the landing at Ciampino.
The flight, as provided for by the procedures for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.
The activation was carried out at the request of the Prefecture of Messina to the Summit Situations Room of the Air Force's 1st Air Command in Milan, which immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission.
Following all necessary procedures by the military crew, the G650 took off from Ciampino Airport, Rome, bound for Catania-Fontanarossa at 12:50. There, the child was immediately embarked with a medical team, taking off again as soon as possible for Rome. After landing at Ciampino Airport, which occurred at 15:20, an ambulance provided for the subsequent transport to the hospital for admission. This is the second operation in just a few days on the Taormina-Rome route that has helped protect children in imminent danger of death.
This type of activity for the benefit of the community is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force. Flight Units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, but also of organs, medical teams or ambulances.
Every year, hundreds of flight hours are carried out for these types of operations by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
