The young patient, needing to reach the Meyer hospital in Florence as quickly as possible, travelled together with his mother and a medical team on a Gulfstream G650 of the 31st Wing.
The emergency medical transport of a baby, just 21 months old and in imminent danger of death, has just concluded with its landing in Florence. The child was hospitalised at San Michele Hospital in Cagliari and needed to be transferred with the utmost urgency to the Meyer Paediatric Hospital.
The flight, as provided for by the procedures for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.
The activation was carried out at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Summit Situations Room of the Italian Air Force's 1st Air Force Command in Milan, which immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission.
Following all necessary procedures by the military crew, the G650 took off from Ciampino Airport bound for Cagliari in the early afternoon, where the child was immediately boarded along with his mother and a medical team. After landing at Florence Airport, which occurred shortly after 5:30 PM, an ambulance provided for the subsequent transfer to the hospital for admission.
This type of activity for the benefit of the community is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force. Flight Units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, but also of organs, medical teams or ambulances.
Every year, hundreds of flight hours are carried out for these types of operations by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
