A newborn baby, whose life was in danger, has been urgently transferred from Cagliari to the “Bambin Gesù” hospital in Rome on an Air Force Falcon 900.
The transport, made necessary to guarantee immediate specialist medical care for the young patient, was requested by the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Situation Room of the Air Force Staff, which immediately arranged the medical flight with an aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino (Rome).
The aircraft, which landed at 3:15 PM at the “Mario Mameli” airport in Cagliari-Elmas, embarked the patient, housed in a thermal cot, a family member, and the medical staff from the San Giovanni di Dio Hospital and the Macciotta Clinic in Cagliari for medical assistance during the flight. It then took off at approximately 3:58 PM, bound for Ciampino airport, where it was met by a mobile medical unit that immediately arranged for the patient's transfer to the ’Bambin Gesù“ Hospital in the capital.
Cagliari-Elmas Airport is currently the most used airport for this type of flight in the southern area of Sardinia, as it is close to the main hospital facilities in the capital and is capable of guaranteeing, with its own staff, adequate assistance to passing aircraft and crews, through quick and safe access to the flight zone for ambulances coming from the city's hospitals.
