The International Summer School was organized by EUMETSAT and the Meteorological Service A.M. The course presented and deepened multi-spectral techniques and methods for extracting useful information for environmental monitoring from satellite images, with a particular emphasis on the latest available measurement technologies.
The 21 participants of the Summer School, welcomed by the Director of the Department of Experimental Meteorology (ReSMA) of Vigna di Valle, Colonel Spuri, his collaborators and representatives of the National Center for Meteorological and Aeronautical Climatology (CNMCA), arrived from different countries of the world and are employed in research institutions, meteorological or civil protection agencies.
EUMETSAT (www.eumetsat.int) is an intergovernmental European organization established with the aim of providing, through satellites, information useful to meteorology and climatic applications. It develops and distributes data, products and satellite images to the Meteorological Services of the current 26 Member States and to other types of users worldwide. In particular, EUMETSAT operates two generations of geostationary satellites METEOSAT, which provide an overview of the globe by orbiting at an altitude of approximately 36,000 km. Their overview is detailed by the observations of the METOP polar satellites belonging to the EPS (EUMETSAT Polar System) program, which, orbiting at an altitude of approximately 800 km, provide accurate atmospheric profiles useful for the assimilation phase of meteorological forecasting models. The organization, together with other agencies such as the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in the United States of America or the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) in Japan, allows for the monitoring, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, of the entire surface of the globe. Italy, through the AM Meteorological Service, has been a member of EUMETSAT since its founding, in 1986.
The appreciation of the course in all its aspects, scientific, organizational and logistical, expressed by the participants led the organizers of EUMETSAT to elect Bracciano as the privileged venue for these training events that have been taking place here for several years now, always benefiting from the collaboration of the AM Meteorological Service and the ReSMA, which has been engaged in environmental monitoring with “in-situ” observations for more than 100 years.
