The transport was carried out by an Air Force aircraft to allow for an immediate kidney transplant.
Following the request sent by the Prefecture of Brindisi, the Summit Situations Room of the Air Force Staff in Rome has ordered the immediate deployment.
The aircraft, which departed from Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, arrived at Brindisi Airport Operations Unit at 00:39. After boarding the patient, it departed at 00:59 for the Lombard capital. Upon arriving at Milan's airport, the woman was transferred to the Maggiore Hospital in Milan to undergo the delicate operation. Aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino (Rome) are used for State transport and public utility missions, such as the urgent medical transport of patients, severely injured individuals, and organs for transplantation, as well as for operations involving people in hazardous situations. This latter activity, given the imminent risk to the lives of those being transported, requires an adequate level of readiness, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. Brindisi Airport is frequently used for these types of flights due to its strategic proximity to the major healthcare facilities in southern Salento.
