A one-day-old newborn was urgently transferred aboard an Air Force aircraft due to a serious medical condition. The request for transport, which was necessary to ensure immediate specialized medical care for the young patient, sent by the hospital to the Cagliari Prefecture, was received by the Situation Room of the Air Force General Staff, which ordered the immediate execution of the flight. The aircraft, a Falcon 50 belonging to the 31st Flight of Ciampino (Rome), landed at the “Mario Mameli” airport in Elmas-Cagliari at 11:08 and departed at 11:32, bound for Pisa Airport, where it arrived after about 1 hour of flight. The newborn, accommodated in a special thermal cradle and accompanied by her parents, was assisted during the flight by a doctor and a nurse from the Cagliari hospital. Upon arrival at the “Galileo Galilei” airport in Pisa, the little patient was immediately transferred, on board an ambulance, to the hospital in Massa, located about 50 km away. The Cagliari-Elmas airport currently represents the most used airport for this type of flights throughout the southern part of Sardinia, as it is close to the main hospitals in the capital. The aircraft of the 31st Stormo of Ciampino are used for state transport and for public utility missions, such as the emergency transport of sick people, severely injured people and organs for transplantation, as well as for interventions in favor of people in any other situation of risk.
This last activity, given the imminent life-threatening danger of the people being transported, requires a level of readiness 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
