The event is part of the activities planned under the 2013 Communication Program. The purpose of the visit was to gain a real insight into the meteorological activities carried out in the Armed Forces, as a complement to the theoretical/practical training provided as part of the study program. The visitors, accompanied by their teachers, were welcomed upon arrival by the Commander of the Detachment, Colonel Andrea Aiello, and the Public Information staff for a welcoming ceremony. After an initial briefing on the institutional tasks carried out by the Air Force and the main activities of the Department, the group of students watched a presentation of some videos about the Armed Forces. During the visit, information was also provided on the recruitment procedures of the Air Force and the cultural and professional level of the courses offered at the Institutes and Training Schools of the Armed Forces. Immediately afterwards, in order to closely observe what was illustrated during the conference, the hostesses visited the various facilities of the detachment, focusing in particular on the meteorological station and the radio surveys, where the students were able to “see with their own eyes” the activities related to the subjects of study, having also the opportunity to witness the launch of the “probe balloon” and the subsequent processing of the meteorological data transmitted. The meetings with the schools, included in the “Communication Program 2013” of the detachment, aim to increase students’ knowledge of the values and traditions of the Air Force as well as the cultural and professional opportunities offered by the Institutes and Schools of the Armed Forces.
The Brindisi detachment provides support for the “peacekeeping” operations of the United Nations Global Service Center (UNGSC) and the “humanitarian” operations of the United Nations Humanitarian Rapid Response Base (UNHRD). It also ensures 24/7 air navigation services for civil aviation and assistance to NATO countries’ transit aircraft.
