Air Force Corps General Gabriele Salvestroni visited the Aeronautical Meteorology Experimental Department at Vigna di Valle. General Salvestroni was welcomed by the Deputy Commander of ReSMA, Lieutenant Colonel Francesco Foti, and by all the staff of the Department.
After attending an illustrative briefing on the Department's activities, the Logistic Commander was able to learn in detail about the experimental activity being carried out at ReSMA. This activity is currently, and for the most part, focused on finalising the “Standard Weather Station” (SWS) project, which aims to automate the observational stations of the Air Force's Meteorological Service.
Following the crest exchange, there was a visit to the Department's experimental field, where General Salvestroni was able to witness the complexity of the aforementioned project and the efforts the Meteorological Service is undertaking to modernise the observational network. The various experiments in progress, in fact, seek to address and resolve some crucial points of station automation, from maintenance issues to the representativeness of measurements.
The Aeronautica Militare's Meteorology Research Department at Vigna di Valle has been operating for over 100 years in the study and experimental verification of meteorological instrumentation, as well as in measuring the physico-chemical variations of atmospheric composition. The ReSMA is a local entity of the Italian Air Force that continues to establish itself, even internationally, by conducting experiments in instrumental observations within the field of meteorology, thus guaranteeing the best possible assistance for air navigation. The Department also ensures, in compliance with international regulations, the quality of environmental monitoring carried out by the Italian Air Force through its Meteorological Service, utilising a network of approximately 100 operational stations located throughout the national territory.
