The UN and the Armed Forces are working together for peacekeeping. The event will be presented on Tuesday, May 31st.
Numerous local civil and military authorities attended the event to bear witness to the international organisation's practical presence in the region. The event provided an opportunity for UN personnel and Italian Armed Forces involved in peacekeeping operations to meet. The celebration, in line with the theme ‘The Rule of Law’, chosen by the United Nations for the year 2011, highlighted the importance of women's role in promoting the rule of law, order, and peace in peacekeeping operations.
Some women from the ‘Department of Peacekeeping Operations’ (DPKO) spoke to share their testimony. By recounting their experiences on peacekeeping missions, they aroused the interest of the large audience in attendance, making them participants in the role of women in challenging realities, such as those involving conflicts. To conclude the ceremony, a concert was held by the UNLB Band & Choir and the Band of the Air Force Schools Command / 3rd Air Region of Bari, conducted by Maestro 1st Warrant Officer Nicola Cotugno. The moment when the Italian National Anthem was performed was very touching, as the voices of the United Nations choir joined the notes of the band. The celebration of ‘Peacekeeping Day’ by UNLB, which the Italian State hosts at the Brindisi Airport Detachment, with the significant presence of the Italian Armed Forces involved in Peacekeeping Operations and the United Nations Logistics Base/Global Service Centre, takes on a meaning that goes far beyond mere collaboration and is characterised as clear recognition of the crucial role jointly played by the Armed Forces and the United Nations in the city of Brindisi and the Puglia region.
