Two AM-X aircraft of the 51st Air Wing have made video and photographic documentation of the areas affected in Sardinia by the cyclone “Cleopatra” The two aircraft equipped with the POD system “RecceLite”They provided an important contribution by providing a detailed overview of the road network and the state of rivers and torrents, reporting any obstacles to the flow of water and photographing the condition of dams and artificial reservoirs that could represent a potential additional danger for the countries hard hit by the passage of the “Cleopatra” cyclone. The realization of this contribution was made possible thanks to the POD “RecceLite” device and through the contribution of the Military Imagery Analyst (A.D.I.) staff. The 51st Squadron carried out the first flight with the AM-X aircraft configured with the POD “RecceLite” on August 28, 2009. This system represents an indispensable instrument for ensuring the operational capability of aerotactic reconnaissance. Thanks to modern electro-optical and infrared sensors with high resolution, it is able to produce digital images with high definition and transmit them, via data link, to the ground station in real time. The same POD, which is used daily in missions carried out in Afghanistan to support troops on the ground, completes the spectrum of capabilities of the AM-X in the ACOL version.
