Materials for UN missions depart from Brindisi Airport, and the Airport Detachment's role is to provide support.
To support UNOCI in carrying out its mandate, with humanitarian material on board, a flight has taken off from the United Nations Logistics Base (UNLB), which has been hosted by Italy since 1994 within the Brindisi Airport Detachment. The Italian Air Force Staff has assigned the task of supporting the UN in peacekeeping activities.
On board the aircraft, a Russian Ilyushin 76, approximately 22 tonnes of various materials were loaded. The aircraft, which departed at 7 AM on 5th February, landed in Accra (Ghana) at 6 PM local time on the same day, after making a technical stop in Tripoli (Libya).
Over the month of February, the UNLB has scheduled a further 8 flights to transport additional material.
