The operation took place in an inaccessible area of the Municipality of Alife in the province of Caserta. Given the difficult environmental context in which the operation occurred, the COA (Operative Command of Air Operations) ordered the deployment of two AB.212 helicopters from the 9th Wing of Grazzanise. Upon arriving in the operational zone, they began searching for the missing person in coordination with personnel from the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS), who had already been alerted. The two flight crews, who alternated searching, managed to locate the missing man after a thorough and meticulous survey of the mountainous area concerned, rescuing him. His health appeared good immediately, and the mission concluded successfully on Tuesday morning. The 9th Wing, with its AB.212 helicopters and its Air Riflemen, carries out Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for personnel, both in Italy and as part of international missions, providing air support to surface forces and intervening with emergency medical evacuation in cases of injury. SAR interventions are carried out under the command of the COA, which coordinates and deploys the Air Force's aerial assets belonging to the 15th Wing of Cervia, its subordinate SAR Centres, and the SAR Squadrons located throughout the national territory.
Continuous training and the capabilities of the aircraft supplied, as well as the night vision aids employed (N.V.G. – Night Vision Goggles), allow crews to operate and provide assistance equally both day and night, in any weather conditions.
