On 1st February 1938, the 36th Wing was formed at Borgo Panigale airport (BO). This unit of the Italian Air Force was responsible for epic feats during the Second World War.
There have been many changes and transformations in the history of the Wing: from ground attack squadron to torpedo bomber squadron, to transport brigade, to missile brigade, to a mixed ground attack-air defence squadron unique in Italy, up to today's configuration as a centre of excellence for National Air Defence. There have also been many aircraft in service: in the recent past, we have gone from the legendary F104 to the Tornado, the MB-339, and the new Eurofighter fighter jet.
The 36th Wing, together with the 4th Wing of Grosseto flying Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft and the 37th Wing of Trapani flying F-16s, ensures the surveillance service of national and NATO airspace. The Department is structured into 2 flying groups: X and XII.
