Familiarisation visit by SEL parliamentarians to the home of the “Red Devils” On Monday 14 October, a familiarisation visit took place at Ghedi Air Base, home to the 6th Wing, by a parliamentary delegation from “Sinistra Ecologia e Libertà” (Left Ecology Freedom), aimed at gaining a closer understanding of one of the most important operational facilities of the Air Force.
As part of a series of meetings that also included the Sigonella and Aviano bases, the delegation's visit, chaired by the Honourable Luigi Lacquaniti, began with a welcome from Colonel Andrea Di Pietro, Commander of the 6th Wing, and part of his Staff, and then continued with an explanatory briefing. The Wing Commander's speech briefly highlighted the history, organisation, and mission of the Department as well as important aspects related to the positive and strong roots of the Base personnel within the local social and economic fabric.
After the briefing, an interesting and constructive discussion followed on various topics, with questions posed by the parliamentarians seeking clarification and useful information for their work in their respective committees, particularly Defence. The visit concluded with a brief tour of the Base. The 6th Wing, equipped with Tornado IDS aircraft (Inter-Diction Strike), is responsible for maintaining the Combat Readiness (Combat Readiness) of flight crews, to cooperate with civilian authorities in the event of natural disasters and to ensure operational conversion and standardisation activities for flight crews assigned to the Tornado line for their subsequent deployment to Operational Squadrons. It is structured into two ’operational‘ Flying Groups, the 154th and the 156th, and one ’training‘ Flying Group, the 102nd.
