The protective structure for the Poggio Ballone radar has been completed. The radome consists of a truncated sphere approximately 14m high, made up of polygonal composite material panels weighing almost 8 tonnes in total. The structure prevents potential damage from atmospheric agents, ensuring continuous operation of the radar in extreme climatic conditions. Inside, it is equipped with a range of safety systems, including those for temperature monitoring, fire and condensation prevention, and the removal of atmospheric precipitation deposits. These works are part of the technical specifications of a contract – managed by the Directorate of Information, Telematics, and Advanced Technologies (TELEDIFE) in coordination with the Air Force – which covers similar interventions at a number of national air defence radar sites.
