The WFP has sent humanitarian aid to the population of the Central African Republic with a flight departing from the Air Force Airfield Unit. The humanitarian flight was organized by the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), managed by the World Food Programme (WFP), which, since 2000, the Italian State has been hosting within the Brindisi base.

Among the aid transported were materials for logistical support for the WFP’s humanitarian operations (including generators, prefabricated modules for housing and office use), 2.6 tons of hygiene kits for the first emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO), and 17.3 tons of Plumpy’ Sup, a special nutritious food intended, in particular, for younger children. The aircraft, a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft of the Emirati company MIDEX, came from Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) and landed in Brindisi on Wednesday the 18th of December, and after the loading operations, it departed towards the international airport of Bangui, an autonomous municipality of the Central African Republic. Upon arrival at the ATOC (Air Terminal Operation Center) of the Salento detachment, the humanitarian aid was prepared and made suitable for transport in accordance with the standards and regulations on air transport, thanks to the “Movement & Transport” (M&T) staff of the local Support Operations Service Unit, who carried out the operations in collaboration with the staff of the World Food Programme. Upon arrival at the destination, the aid will be delivered to the World Food Programme staff, who will then distribute it to the population.

The Air Force Detachment of Brindisi, subordinate to the Deputy Logistics Commander, provides support for the “peacekeeping” activities of the United Nations Global Service Center (UNGSC) and humanitarian activities of the Humanitarian Emergency Response Base (UNHRD).
