The ceremony took place at the elementary school named after him in the Tor Sapienza neighborhood in Rome.
The memory of Captain Pizzicaroli is linked to a gesture of great generosity that cost him the sacrifice of his life at the age of 25. It was July 3, 1982, when the young Officer, aboard his F-104 G, was flying over the skies of Bonde di Salizzole (VR), about 40 km from Villafranca. Upon noticing a malfunction, to prevent the aircraft from crashing into a populated area, he flew it after directing it to an uninhabited area, where he was killed in the impact. This extreme gesture probably saved the lives of many other people.
The moving ceremony was attended by the family members of the late pilot, a representative of the Air Force, many colleagues from the “Sparviero III” course, and some institutional representatives from Municipio VII.
At the request of the school principal, Dr. Giuseppe Mercurio, who was also supported in this matter by a local non-profit organization for the organization of the event, the occasion was transformed into a didactic project to introduce the small students of the “Marco Pizzicaroli” school to the world of flight and, in particular, to the institutional activities of the Italian Air Force.
The Air Force Band before the formal ceremony, which saw its final act being the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the school’s atrium, delighted the many children present and their families with a dedicated musical program.
