The visit served to strengthen relations between the Wing personnel and the local community.
The activity, part of a series of meetings that the Association's local sections hold at Italian Air Force departments, gave members the opportunity to get to know the Sicilian military base.
During their stay at Sigonella, guests attended an informative briefing on the Wing's specific activities, before proceeding with a visit to the main airport facilities.
Particularly moving was the moment of the depositing of the laurel wreath with which the Monselice Section wished to pay tribute to the fallen of the 41st Wing. The day concluded with the address by Colonel Pilot Dario Missaglia, Commander of the 41st Wing, and the presentation of the Unit’s crest. The Air Force Association is a society that brings together retired and active military personnel of the Italian Air Force and is also open to all supporters of the Armed Force. The Monselice Section, dedicated to M.A.V.M. Av.Sc. Antonio Bordigato, was established in 1973 and is currently presided over by Cav. Dott. Fernando Parolo.
The 41st Wing, equipped with Breguet 1150 Atlantic aircraft, ensures the counteraction of underwater and naval threats and provides long-range maritime search and rescue services. Added to these activities is also the monitoring of merchant traffic in the Mediterranean, as part of “post-September 11th” operations against international terrorism. The Atlantics are, in fact, capable of independently conducting systematic searches across the entire Mediterranean area. The 41st Wing is also responsible for controlling the airspace of the Catania Control Zone, within which lies the Sigonella military airport and the Catania Fontanarossa civil airport, which handles over 200 aircraft movements daily.
