The course was conducted by the Italian Red Cross at the 31st Wing of Ciampino. The course provided the attending personnel with specific skills and guidelines to follow in order to safeguard the lives of children and newborns in the event of choking due to airway obstruction, a scenario which annually still causes too many deaths among the very young and requires adults around them to intervene promptly and with preparation.
The activity forms part of a memorandum of understanding between the 31st Wing and the Italian Red Cross, who have been collaborating for some years in a synergistic pathway aimed at the mutual enhancement of staff skills.
The strong link between the Wing and the Red Cross was reiterated on 6th May when the academic year for volunteer nurses was inaugurated at the Unit; these same volunteers will receive their training at the airport's facilities with the collaboration of the Wing's medical staff.
Furthermore, the collaboration has also enabled other courses to be held in recent months, such as BLS-D (Basic Life Support-Defibrillator), a basic course on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of a defibrillator, which will be followed by an advanced first aid course (FULL-D). All activities aim to raise the skill level of the Wing's personnel and their ability to provide an increasingly comprehensive service to the community.
