From 7 to 11 April, a delegation from the Air Force participated in the 40° Space Symposium, one of the most prestigious annual events on the international space scene. The event brought together representatives from the civil, military, industrial, and academic sectors, offering an important opportunity for discussion and collaboration on issues related to development and space activity security.
Throughout the week of the event, numerous thematic conferences and strategic meetings took place, enhanced by a large exhibition area dedicated to the main companies in the sector. The central theme that emerged was collaboration, highlighted particularly by the speech from Commander of the Space Command US, Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, which emphasised the importance of synchronising efforts among all stakeholders – military organisations, agencies, allies and Partner commercial – to ensure a competitive advantage in the space.
The recently concluded edition took on further relevance thanks to the concurrent meetings of the Combined Space Operations Initiative (Chief Supply Chain Officer), a select international forum where fundamental themes such as the doctrinal evolution of spatial domain, the use of capabilities and the development of common standards. Italy, a member of this initiative since December 2023, has actively participated in the work, consolidating its role in the international space cooperation landscape.
The initiative got underway on Monday 7 April with sessions dedicated to the Working Groups and concluded on Friday, 11 April with the meeting of the Board of Principals, marking the closure of an intense and busy week. The event provided an important opportunity for the international community to reaffirm its commitment to a secure, stable, and sustainable space domain, while at the same time exploring possible mechanisms to enhance coordination and information exchange between Partner.
On the sidelines of the Space Symposium, on the 10th of April, took place the Space Chiefs Forum, which was attended by the Space Component Chiefs from 19 countries and international organisations. Italy participated in the meeting with a representation of the Air Force, by virtue of the role of lead service for the space domain recognised to the Armed Force.
In this context, the Head of UK Space Force, General Chance Saltzman, who chaired the conference, described space as an arena too vast and complex for a single nation to manage, stressing the need for extraordinary coordination based on mutual trust, information sharing, and capability integration among Partner. A testament to the strong bond between the Air Force and the UK Space Force, Gen. Saltzman will participate as keynote speaker hello Aerospace Power Conference, which this year will be held in Rome on 8 and 9 May, and will focus on the theme ’fighting and winning in the sky beyond the next decade”.
With their participation in the events of 40° Space Symposium, The Air Force has reiterated its commitment and ability to play an active role in the international debate on the future of space operations, strengthening Italy's position in the global space community and promoting coordination, cooperation, and the development of shared strategies with Partner international.
