Middle East: Special flight of a C-130J carrying Palestinian children needing treatment in Italy

It has taken off from the’Egypt a special flight with a C-130J of the 46th Air Brigade of the’Italian Air Force for transport within Italy of the 45 people, comprising children and chaperones, from Gaza Strip and in need of medical care. Patients will be welcomed and assisted in some of the best Italian hospitals. Italy thus confirms its support for the civilian population of the Gaza Strip. 

It Secretary of State for Defence, Guido Crosetto, stated: “Italy continues to demonstrate its humanitarian commitment through its actions. Once again, we are doing everything we can to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza with concrete and timely action. Every child we bring to Italy is a sign of hope, a commitment to life and to the future. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the personnel of the Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Civil Protection and the healthcare professionals who made this complex and delicate operation possible. Italy confirms its role as a country that helps, supports and protects those in difficulty.”.

This initiative bears witness to Italy's concrete commitment to facilitating access to healthcare for the most vulnerable and to contributing to the region's stabilisation. The recent mission is indeed part of this framework. European Union Border Assistance Mission in Rafah, to which our country participates with a contingent of Carabinieri at the Rafah crossing to coordinate and facilitate the daily transit of the wounded and sick.

The initiative is in addition to the humanitarian efforts already undertaken by Italy in favour of the Palestinian population, including the joint operation with Jordan, named “A bridge for Gaza”, with the transport of humanitarian aid through Italian and Jordanian Armed Forces air assets, the sending of humanitarian aid via the Cyprus Maritime Corridor, and healthcare assistance provided by the Navy vessel Vulcano.
