“1000 MIGLIA”: THE HISTORIC VINTAGE CAR RACE STOPS AT GHEDI AIRPORT

The Red Devils are opening the gates for the 37th edition of “...the most beautiful race in the world...”.”

On Saturday, 18th May, the “Luigi Olivari” military airport in Ghedi (BS), home to the 6th Wing, has opened its gates for the passage of the thirty-seventh edition of the historic car race 1000 Miles.
During the final stage, before reaching Brescia, the race, unique for the precious and inimitable four-wheeled jewels that take part in it, crossed the Stormo's site, speeding past the Red Devils' Tornados.
The roar of the engines of 450 vintage cars of extraordinary historical value from all over the world graced the 6th Wing's day, recalling the history and birth of motoring as well as the passion of its pioneers, evidenced by this true travelling museum.
At the end of the passage, the Commander of the 6th Wing, Colonel Luca Maineri, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the event and added that “...the union between the 1000 Miglia and the 6th Wing represents a synergy between Italian excellences capable of fascinating and thrilling [...] A synergy of passions, that for motors and that for flying, also evidenced by the fact that one of the founding fathers of the race – Count Mazzotti – was also an aircraft pilot.”.
In the late afternoon, the classic and glittering parade along Viale Venezia in Brescia brought the event to a close.

The 6th Wing “Alfredo Fusco”, hierarchically subordinate to the Air Squad Command of Rome, via the Combat Forces Command of Milan, has the task of planning and coordinating training and capability readiness based on national and NATO/EU plans for precision engagement, support to surface forces, and reconnaissance in the EO/IR and electromagnetic spectrum. It also ensures the operational conversion and standardisation activities of flight crews assigned to the Tornado IDS/ECR line.
