Air Rescue: Italian Air Force helicopter intervenes in Sardinia to rescue an injured woman

The mission was conducted by the 80th SAR (Search And Rescue) Centre of Decimomannu in synergy with the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps Sardinia

The HH-139B helicopter of the 80th SAR (Search And Rescue) Centre of the 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force, based in Decimomannu (CA), took off at around 4:15 PM to carry out the rescue of an injured woman near Supramonte di Orgosolo (NU).

The crew on standby, who had recently received their mission order from the Operations Room of the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) of the Poggio Renatico Aerospace Operations Command (FE), headed towards the recovery site to rescue the injured Belgian hiker. She had been hurt in an inaccessible area of the Gorropu Gorge (NU) and was unable to reach a road accessible by rescue vehicles on her own. After being immobilised by the responding team, which also included technicians from the CNSAS and the Mountain Rescue of the Guardia di Finanza, the injured person was recovered aboard the helicopter, which landed in a safe area nearby. She was then airlifted to the San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro, as directed by the 118 emergency control centre.

After winching back the Italian Air Force air rescuer and some technicians who remained on the ground in the recovery area, the helicopter and its full crew returned to the Decimomannu base shortly before 18:30, immediately becoming available for immediate deployment if necessary.

The 15th Wing guarantees search and rescue for aircrews in distress 24 hours a day, every single day of the year, also contributing to public utility activities such as searching for missing persons at sea or in mountains, emergency medical transport of patients in imminent danger of death, and rescue of severely injured individuals, operating in complex weather conditions, both day and night. Since its establishment to the present day, the crews of the 15th Wing have saved thousands of people in danger of death, while in summer they also carry out Forest Firefighting (AIB) activities as part of the assets provided by the Defence for this campaign. Dependent on the 15th Wing of Cervia, besides the 80th SAR Centre of Decimomannu (Cagliari), there are also the 82nd SAR Centre of Trapani, the 85th SAR Centre of Pratica di Mare (Rome), the 84th SAR Centre of Gioia del Colle (Bari), and the 83rd SAR Group, located in Cervia (Ravenna), all dispersed across the national territory.

The Italian Air Force's flight units are capable of transporting patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for these types of operations, not only by the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia but also by the aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, and the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa.
