The 36th Fighter Wing, which reports to the Air Squad Command through the Combat Forces Command, is one of the Italian Air Force's air defence wings ensuring the surveillance of national airspace 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with an integrated defence system, even in peacetime, with that of other NATO member countries. The service is guaranteed – for surveillance, identification and control – by the 11th DAMI Group in Poggio Renatico (FE) and the 22nd Radar Group in Licola (NA); for air interception, by the 4th Wing (GR), the 36th Wing (BA) and the 37th Wing (TP), all equipped with Eurofighter fighter aircraft. Since January 2017, the Italian Air Force has also activated a Eurofighter F-2000 cell at the 51st Wing in Istrana in order to optimise the coverage of national airspace, with the aim of generally reducing response times and promptly countering any threats. Since March 2018, F-35 aircraft from the 32nd Wing in Amendola have also been integrated into the air defence system, contributing specific operational capabilities and cutting-edge technology to the defence of Italian skies. The flag of the 36th Fighter Wing still holds the most war decorations of the entire Italian Air Force: one Silver Medal of Military Valour to the 36th Ground Bombardment Wing, one Gold Medal of Military Valour to the 36th Torpedo Bomber Wing, one Silver Medal of Military Valour to the 36th Night Wing, one Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Italy to the 36th Fighter Wing, while its personnel have been awarded a remarkable 8 Gold Medals of Military Valour posthumously, 43 Silver Medals, 123 Bronze Medals and 27 War Crosses.
