Military Air Force plans against the threat of drones
From November 23 to December 20, the Air Force was called upon to support the Armed Forces of Qatar during the competition FIFA Arab Cup 2021, through the deployment of a Task Group Counter-Unmanned Aerial Anti-drone System (C-UAS), directly subordinate to the Commander of the IT NCC Air, ColonelAntonio Vivolo, as part of the missionInherent Resolve – Prima Parthica.
The support requested concerned defense against the threat posed by so-called “mini and micro drones”. For this reason the Air Force risked the fixed anti-drone system“ACUS (AMI Counter UAS) together with systems jammer portable. Overall in Task Group About 30 units are employed between Air Gunners of the 16th Stormtrooper “Protection of Forces” and industry operators Force Protection belonging to 4°, 6° e 32nd Wing.
The C-UAS capabilities include the acquisition of technologies for the sighting and eventual neutralization of drones of even very small size that fly at low altitude over sensitive or restricted areas such as military installations, in order to protect the personnel working there and the material assets stored therein.
In a context specifically prepared in full compliance with all the measures provided for in the COVID-19 health protocols, the activity was an important experience of international cooperation and a demonstration of the capabilities of C-UAS, which have become increasingly necessary due to the proliferation of illegal activities carried out using remote-controlled systems that, due to their size, are not only difficult to visualize with traditional surveillance and detection systems, but also complex to combat with conventional aircraft or helicopters.
