The AMX Ghibli (aeronautical designation A-11B) is a single-engine attack and reconnaissance aircraft, also available in a two-seat advanced training version (AMX-T, aeronautical designation TA-11B) with operational capabilities similar to those of the single-seat version. The Ghibli is capable of performing close air support missions, tactical reconnaissance, and air-to-surface operations with ground and naval forces. It is equipped with an air-to-air refuelling system and is capable of all-weather missions.
It was initially acquired in 136 examples, of which 26 were two-seaters, partly updated to the ACOL standard (Acquisition of Operational and Logistics Capabilities), aimed, among other things, at equipping it with more modern, precise, and advanced munitions.
Il programma AMX è stato sviluppato da Aeritalia e Aermacchi, e realizzato con la brasiliana Embraer, con quote del 70,3% per l’industria italiana e del 29.7% per il Brasile.
The AMX aircraft was a light attack and reconnaissance fighter developed as part of an international collaboration programme between Italy and the Federative Republic of Brazil.
Entering service with the Air Force in 1988, Ghibli is the “nickname” given to the AMX in the nineties. This aircraft is capable of carrying out “all-weather” close support, tactical reconnaissance, and air cooperation missions with surface forces (land and naval). To enhance its operational capabilities, a mid-life modernisation programme called ACOL (Operational and Logistical Capability Update) has been completed. This initiative was aimed, among other things, at equipping the aircraft with more modern, precise, and advanced munitions, as well as resolving numerous obsolescence issues concerning certain equipment.
The AMX aircraft's service cycle ended on 30/04/2024.
