In July 2022 the first advanced training course (phase IV) was established within the International Flight Training School (IFTS), a development from a 2018 agreement between the Italian Air Force and Leonardo for Italian and foreign pilots destined for 4The and fiveThe The 61st Wing's 212 IFTS (Italian Air Force Training School) Group carried out its duties at the Decimomannu (CA) air base.and Wing based at Lecce Galatina.
The picturesque Pincio Terrace in Rome provided the backdrop for the formal celebrations marking the centenary of the Italian Air Force, which officially became a separate and independent armed force on 28 March 1923. The ceremony, characterised by great symbolic and institutional importance, took place in the presence of the President of the Republic. Throughout the year, the Armed Force organised a series of events under the heading of “THE CENTENARY“.
In January 2024, utilizing Axiom Space's Ax-3 mission, the Air Force took Italy's National System and Colonel Walter Villadei, accompanied by a completely European crew of three others, to the International Space Station, where they stayed for 21 days. This event followed the Air Force's first suborbital flight, also conducted by Villadei in 2023, aboard the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo shuttle.
