Sardinia, life-saving flight: Air Force aircraft transports newborn from Alghero to Rome

The baby, only four days old, was transported on a Falcon 50 from the 31st Wing of Ciampino.

A medical emergency flight was carried out yesterday evening with a newborn, only 4 days old transported from Alghero to Rome with a Falcon 50 aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force, based in Ciampino.

The little one, in danger of her life, needed to be transported with extreme urgency and the utmost speed from the’University Hospital of Sassari all’Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome, to receive specific treatment.

The Falcon 50, which boarded the baby at Alghero-Fertilia airport, transported with the aid of a thermal cot, accompanied by her parents and assisted by a medical team, departed around 7:00 PM, reaching Rome Ciampino airport after about an hour of flight. From there, the young patient, met on site by an ambulance, was able to reach the hospital of destination in a short time.

It Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities carried out by the Air Force for the benefit of the community. Flight, defined “IPV – Imminent Danger to Life”, it was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari at the Summit Situation Room of the Air Squad Command, the operations room of the Air Force which has among its functions that of ordering and managing these types of missions. The 31st Wing, one of the Departments that carries out the service of Operational readiness for urgent medical transport.

The Flying Squadrons of the Air Force are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with means and crews able to ensure the transport of patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions.

Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of operation, by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
