Sardinia, life-saving flight: Air Force aircraft transports newborn from Cagliari to Milan
The critically ill child was transported by a Falcon 50 from the 31st Wing of Ciampino.
The emergency medical transport of a 7-day-old newborn, transferred from Cagliari to Milan by a Falcon 50 aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Air Force, based in Ciampino, concluded just a few minutes ago.
The child, in life-threatening danger, needed to be transported with extreme urgency and utmost speed from the Monserrato University Polyclinic “Duilio Casula”, where he was previously hospitalised, to the San Donato Milanese Polyclinic, to receive specific treatment.
The flight, which embarked at Cagliari Elmas airport with the child accompanied by family members and a medical team, then departed for Milan Linate airport, in order to reach the destination hospital in a short time.
Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities carried out by the Air Force in service to the community. The flight, defined as “IPV – Imminent Peril to Life”, was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Summit Situation Room of the Air Squadron Command, the operational room of the Air Force which, among its functions, also disposes and manages this type of mission. The 31st Wing, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for emergency medical transport, was therefore immediately involved.
The Italian Air Force's Flying Departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of transporting patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of operation, by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
