Macchi M.416

Single-engine, single-wing, two-seat, early-stage training aircraft.

It was a mixed-construction aeroplane, powered by a 190 hp six-cylinder horizontally opposed Lycoming O-435, with a two-bladed wooden propeller. The fork-type, swinging main landing gear legs gave it a characteristic squat appearance, earning it the nickname “democristiano” (Christian Democrat).

It was acquired by the Air Force in 1950 and was distributed to flying schools as an initial trainer.

The M.416 flew until 1980.

A specimen is on display at the MUSAM in Vigna di Valle (RM).
