A 35 anni di distanza dall’ultima volta, il prossimo ottobre il nostro Paese ospiterà l’esercitazione che vedrà circa 80 aeromobili di oltre 10 Paesi rischierati presso l’Aeroporto di Gioia del Colle, sede del 36° Stormo “Caccia” dell’Aeronautica Militare

Si terrà dal 2 al 13 ottobre in Italia, presso l’Aeroporto di Gioia del Colle dell’Aeronautica Militare, l’edizione 2023 del “NATO Tiger Meet”, una delle più importanti e articolate esercitazioni internazionali che punta ad affinare la cooperazione e facilitare la condivisione di esperienze addestrative tra Forze Armate dei Paesi Alleati.

Il “NATO Tiger Meet” – che ogni anno dal 1960 fa incontrare i Gruppi di Volo delle diverse Forze Armate nel cui stemma è presente una “tigre” – si è svolto per la prima volta in Italia cinquanta anni fa (1973) presso la base di Cameri, per poi tornarvi anche nel 1980 e nel 1988. A distanza di trentacinque anni, l’Italia ospiterà nuovamente questo importante meeting addestrativo internazionale, anche in concomitanza con i festeggiamenti per il Centenario dell’Aeronautica Militare, costituita come forza armata autonoma nel 1923. La base aerea di Gioia del Colle (BA), sede del 36° Stormo “Caccia”, sarà il luogo di incontro per piloti ed equipaggi di volo provenienti da oltre 10 Paesi della NATO e suoi partner, che si eserciteranno – con operazioni che interesseranno lo spazio aereo di Puglia, Calabria e Basilicata – per perfezionare l’interoperabilità degli assetti in missioni di difesa e interdizione aerea, di supporto a truppe a terra (Close Air Support – CAS) o di ricerca e recupero di personale in ambiente ostile (Personnel Recovery – PR). Tale addestramento, che in gergo viene chiamato Large Force Employment (LFE), coinvolgerà circa 70 aeromobili ad ala fissa e 10 ad ala rotante, provenienti da oltre 10 nazioni, molti dei quali con livree speciali dedicate proprio al Tiger Meet. Oltre a reparti dell’Aeronautica Militare, nell’esercitazione saranno impiegati anche assetti della Marina Militare.

In Italia sono due i membri della NATO Tiger Meet Association, entrambi dell’Aeronautica Militare. Il 12° Gruppo Volo del 36° Stormo “Caccia” – erede dal 2001 della Squadriglia delle “Tigri Bianche” del 21° Gruppo “Caccia” – nel 2021 ha vinto il prestigioso “Silver Tiger Trophy”, riconoscimento che viene conferito al Gruppo Volo che si distingue maggiormente durante l’esercitazione. Il 21° Gruppo Volo del 9° Stormo di Grazzanise (CE), invece, entrato a far parte dell’allora NATO Tiger Club nel 1968, si è aggiudicato il “Silver Tiger Trophy” sia nel 1998 sia nel 2015, mentre nel 2021 si è aggiudicato l’altrettanto prestigioso riconoscimento quale miglior gruppo elicotteri partecipante all’esercitazione.

The NATO Tiger Meet returns to Italy: the exercise involving armed forces from over 10 countries will take place in Gioia del Colle air base

Thirty-five years after the last time, next October Italy will host the exercise involving around 80 aircraft from over 10 countries, deployed at Gioia del Colle airport, home of the 36th Wing “Caccia”of the Italian Air Force.

The 2023 edition of the NATO Tiger Meet will be held from October 2nd to 13th at the Italian Air Force’s Gioia del Colle military airport. This is one of the most important and articulated international exercises, that aims to sharpen cooperation and facilitate the sharing of training experiences among the Armed Forces of the Allied Countries.

The NATO Tiger Meet – which, every year since 1960, brings together the Flight Groups of the various Armed Forces whose emblem bears a “tiger” –, was first held in Italy fifty years ago (1973) at the Cameri military base, and then again in 1980 and 1988. Thirty-five years later, Italy will once again host this important international training meeting, also in conjunction with the celebrations for the centenary of the Italian Air Force, which was established as an autonomous armed force in 1923. The Gioia del Colle air base (Bari), home to the 36th Wing “Caccia”, will host pilots and flight crews from over 10 NATO countries and their partners. With operations that will involve the airspace of Puglia, Calabria and Basilicata, in Southern Italy, the exercise will be useful to perfect the interoperability of assets in defence and air interdiction missions, provide support to troops on the ground (Close Air Support, CAS) or search and recovery of personnel in a hostile environment (Personnel Recovery – PR). This “Large Force Employment (LFE)” training will involve around 70 fixed-wing and 10 rotary-wing aircraft from over 10 nations, with special liveries dedicated specifically to the Tiger Meet. In addition to Italian Air Force units, Italian Navy assets will also be deployed in the exercise.

In Italy, there are two members of the NATO Tiger Meet Association, both from the Air Force. The 12th Flight Squadron of the 36th Wing “Caccia”, heir to the “White Tigers” from the 21st Fighter Squadron since 2001, in 2021 won the prestigious “Silver Tiger Trophy”, an award given to the Flight Group that distinguishes itself most during the exercise. The 21st Flight Squadron of the 9th Wing of Grazzanise, which joined the then ‘NATO Tiger Club’ in 1968, won the “Silver Tiger Trophy” in both 1998 and 2015, while in 2021 it won the prestigious award as the best helicopter group participating in the exercise.
