La tradizione acrobatica di altissimo livello espressa oggi dalle Frecce Tricolori trae spunto da un glorioso passato fatto di uomini e di macchine che sin dagli anni '30 iniziarono a praticare il volo acrobatico per rappresentare l'Aeronautica nelle manifestazioni aeree internazionali e tenere in alto l'onore ed il prestigio dell'Italia in campo aeronautico.

Pur tuttavia nei primi anni del dopoguerra l'Aeronautica Militare si limita a partecipare alle manifestazioni aere nazionali con piccole formazioni.

La costituzione di una vera e propria pattuglia acrobatica è fortemente condizionata dal numero ridotto di macchine disponibili e dalle loro precarie condizioni di efficienza nonché da un generale clima di austerità che regna in quegli anni.

Bisogna giungere agli inizi degli anni '50 quando lo Stato Maggiore Aeronautica valuta concretamente la possibilità di affidare ad un reparto di prima linea il compito di costituire una pattuglia acrobatica.

The high-level aerobatic tradition shown today by the Frecce Tricolori comes from a glorious past made possible by men and machines that, since the early 1930s began to practise aerobatic flight in order to represent our Air Force at international air shows and to maintain the honour and prestige of  Italy in the aeronautical field.

In the early post-war years, the Air Force only participated in national air shows with small aerobatic formations.

The foundation of a true aerobatic team was strongly conditioned by the limited number of aircraft available and by the precarious conditions of efficiency, as well as by the general climate of austerity reigning in those years.

We had to wait until the early 1950s, for the Air Force General Staff to concretely consider the possibility of tasking a front line division with the creation of an aerobatic team.
