Gli AB.212 permettono all'Aeronautica Militare di assicurare il servizio di ricerca e soccorso sull’intera Penisola e acque territoriali. Grazie alla capacità d'impiego di giorno, di notte e in condizioni meteo critiche, con l'utilizzo di visori notturni NVG (
Night Vision Goggles), gli AB.212 e i loro equipaggi rappresentano un punto fermo nelle missioni più complesse e di difficile gestione. Anche gli AB.212, nella configurazione ICO (Implementazione Capacità Operativa) provvisti di protezione passiva dell'equipaggio, di armamento difensivo e di contromisure antimissile a guida infrarossa, sono stati rischierati in teatro operativo a supporto del contingente ISAF in Afghanistan. I reparti AB.212 del
15° Stormo hanno anche sviluppato una capacità Combat SAR che a livello nazionale viene gestita dall'Aeronautica Militare tramite il Comando Operazioni Aeree di Poggio Renatico (Ferrara) con all’interno un Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) col compito di Comando e Controllo degli assetti SAR (Ricerca e Soccorso). La funzione SAR è affidata al 15° Stormo di Cervia da cui dipendono l'81° Centro Addestramento Equipaggi (CAE) e l'83° Gruppo Combat SAR (CSAR) di Cervia, l'82° Centro CSAR di Trapani, l'84° Centro SAR di Brindisi, l'85° Centro SAR di Pratica di Mare e la 615^ Squadriglia Collegamenti.

The AB.212 allow the Italian Air Force to ensure the search and rescue service throughout the peninsula and its coastal waters. Thanks to the real capability of night and day employment and in almost extreme weather conditions with the use of the Night Vision Goggles (NVGs), the AB.212 and their crews represent, as the HH-3F, a steady point in complex and tough missions. Also the AB.212, in the ICO (Operational Capability Implementation) configuration, equipped with passive crew protection, defensive armament and antimissiles infrared countermeasures, have been deployed in operational theatre to support the ISAF contingent in Afghanistan. The AB.212 Squadrons of the 15th Wing have also developed a Combat SAR capability which at national level is managed by the Italian Air Force through the Air Operations Command in Poggio Renatico (Ferrara), where it has been established a Rescue Coordination Center (RCC), whose task is to execute command and control of SAR assets. The SAR function is institutionally assigned to the 15th Wing in Cervia, under the responsibilities of which there are the 81st Crew Training Center, equipped with AB.212, and the 83rd Combat SAR Squadron in Cervia (Ravenna), the 82nd Combat SAR Squadron in Trapani, the 84th Combat SAR Squadron in Brindisi, the 85th Combat SAR Center in Pratica di Mare, all equipped with helicopters HH-3F, and the 615th Support Squadron equipped with helicopters NH500.
